At Sea Hapless Tea Party Lunatics and Whackjobs

I witnessed the Tea Party rally in downtown Colorado Springs at Acadia Park. There was about 1000 people in the park, but many of them were students on lunch break from Palmer HS across the street, plus the regular assorted collection of townies, downtown workers, hobos, and young people from CC up the street. Lots of blather and hyperbole. The politicians speaking on the stage were not the only hucksters trying to hustle money and votes from the unenlightened mass, as several impromptu sales stands were around vending Confederate flags, stickers, buttons, and other related paraphernalia. The supporters of full grass legalization were out in full mass as well, and one could see smoking going on in the crowd, not necessarily entirely tobacco. It was a decent enough day for a rally, and the hapless media types from tv, radio, and print had their simpleton lackeys out trying to make a story out of nothing. Too bad the rain did not come three hours earlier -- that was the real story of the day, with the first real measurable rainfall (not snowfall) since at least early last autumn, about seven months ago.

All in all, a gathering of nitwits who can only complain, bellow, and whine. I have yet to hear any solutions whatsoever from these varmints: only rabble-rousing and vociferous spitting of mindless prattle. The federal and state budgets are quite clear. Either taxes need to be raised or the big programs cut. The programs that will have to get cut will have to be those for seniors like Social Security and Medicare. Medicaid and Defense are the only other real options. Given the demographic make-up of this Tea Party gathering here and likely elsewhere across the nation on THR (there were so many old balding grey haired coots along with wild-eyed middle aged zealots looking for a purpose in their lives), none of these alternatives for cuts are realistic and are minimally able to get done politically. Tax increases are just likely out, even though there is some feasibility for enactment of new taxes such as VAT, FAIR Tax, and income tax boosts. Most people cannot pay anymore with the way things are going. The wealthy elite can ante up more, but most of them do not have much more to give besides those in the ten figure and greater income bracket like sports owners, players, actors, entertainers, corporate executives and officers, and rap musicians. Those folks could give plenty more, but there really is not enough of them to make a significant dent in the area of revenue shortfall.
What has to happen is for a massive reform of the tax code. Fortune 5000 corporations need to mandated to actually pay federal income taxes instead of lobbying the system so they can work it to their advantage and shirk their duties. An indexed and progressive federal tax on corporate revenues also needs to be enacted to encourage corporations to have a minimal market share, maximize competition, open up markets for more to enter into, split apart, avoid mergers, get rid of their inner bloody pork for their VIPs, and be proper responsible legal citizens of this nation, since they are now people according to the law of the land recently ordered by our wonderful US Supreme Court.
Fat chance that will happen - even though the answer to most problems can be found in history. Back to the 50s would work, but it is politically impossible.
The unfortunate destiny of the nation is that it will go broke, declare bankruptcy or insolvency, significantly devalue the currency, and drive many more middle class and the poor into lives marked with greater hopelessness, stress, and despair. The USA is well on to the path of being a failed state, and it is only a matter of time before it eventuates and dissolves into a number of new nations.

And all the yabbering and whining by unenlightened twits who cannot see the forest for the trees is not going to stop it. The best of the ride is over: try to enjoy the downslide. It will be bad, but there are a few things to be grateful for. One just has to figure out what those are for each of us. A clue: basic, unadulterated simplicity.

Now What ? Better, But No Panacea

It only took more than 75 years, and probably longer, for at least a somewhat comprehensive national health care legislative act to get passed by Congress. The final legislation leaves much to be desired and is highly imperfect.

The nation basically had three choices on this critical matter: maintain the status quo and largely do nothing; opt for the best solution, a single payer system; or do something in between but probably not half-way to what was needed, which is what it seems we have ended up with this legislative package.

I do not foresee gloom and doom with this legislation being enacted like others do, but it is only a start in a process that will only continue to evolve and mature into something far different than what we have now. Many insurance corporations will all but disappear this decade (2011-2020) with then a small oligopoly of providers remaining that inevitably within time decrease further in numbers; and eventually all will go belly up and get swallowed by the government creating the single payer system which is about the only cost effective way to have a functioning system for everybody, particularly the massive fast growing numbers of baby boomers now just entering into their years where their health will require much greater attention and huge financial outlays to be paid for.

By 2025 this will be the reality and everyone will be anteing up about 4% of paychecks, all other compensation, and any and all investment dividend revenue to pay for this system to come. The legislation enacted is grossly inadequate and lacking in prescience to provide for the needed funding and revenue required in the near future, to say nothing of what is down the road in 20 to 30 years and beyond when the nation is made up of a citizenry that consists of 20 % octogenarians and older, with some states over one-quarter in that population demographic. All the illegal immigrants here and that will be inevitably arriving in the coming years will not be enough to provide enough financial counterweight for all the coots, geezers, grannies, and turkeys needing massive care and the funds to pay for it

And even these changes that I envision are likely to be insufficient. Although unlikely, a darker scenario may emerge where the youth and less powerful force into existence a system where the older and more infirm may just have to deal with no system they get to participate in unless they are moneyed and financially blessed. It would not be surprising to see lots of newly old boomers and Gen Xers dying slow deaths everywhere in the next two to four decades without much in the way of medical care available. Walmart, Target, and Walgreens may get heavily involved in the area of assisted suicide across the nation to relieve the country the burden of all these soon to be unproductive geezers slowly and painfully wasting away in places everywhere. Given the certain financial collapse of the US in the next decade (2011-2020), a horrific scenario like this is not out of the question.

Count me in as one of those destined for a less than desirable fate if the worst case scenario even eventuates partially. Barring a financial miracle or an instance of incredibly unforeseen fortune, I will be there. Excuse me for believing it would be better for me to go suddenly in the next several years rather than meander painfully for an indeterminate period of time in the years ahead beyond that in a state that is largely unimaginable and completely painful beyond belief.

In conclusion, the legislation enacted this week will stand much to the chagrin of those who wanted to maintain the status quo of a health care system based on class and wealth, which is at the core of most all disputes and controversies domestically in the last century. There are simply a lot of people who do not want to be mandated to share; but volunteerism and charity does not work anywhere adequately enough and is significantly unjust. The changes made this week are imperfect, but better than what many were being forced to deal with for the most part in the last generation -- unless one is wealthy, privileged, or is loftily employed in a Fortune 10000 corporation.

Programs such as Social Security and Medicare built the American middle class – and solutions such as health care reform, banking reform, consumer protection, and freeing our politics from the stranglehold of big money that will save us now.

Instead of tearing down our country, we ought to be building it up.

We should rebuild our manufacturing base, based on clean energy, high-speed trains, bio-medical research, and other 21st century endeavors. We should promote research and development. We should promote small business and American innovation.

We must rebuild our infrastructure – not just our roads and bridges, but our schools and homes which need to become energy-efficient. We should end our addiction to oil and gas as soon as we can, with clean solar and wind energy.

We need health care reform now. Having to stay in a bad job because you, your spouse or your kid needs medical care is a modern day form of slavery, not freedom!

We need to promote lending by small and large banks – and break up the so-called “too big to fail” banks. We need a real Consumer Financial Productions Protection Agency. We need real, not fake, reform.

The American Dream is under attack. And this is the fight of our generation. It is a fight Americans have been fighting since our Revolution – a fight to make equal opportunity a reality, not an empty slogan.

Lose this fight, and we lose our country to a bunch of over-pampered plutocrats. We lose opportunities for ourselves and our children to succeed.

Politicians too timid to fight for solutions to our serious national problems, such as some Blue Dog Democrats, do not deserve our support. And we must throw out of office politicians directly working against our general welfare – unfortunately, that includes all Congressional and Senate Republicans, who are marching in lock-step with the GOP bully boys determined to oppose any Obama program.

People move forward both as groups and as individuals. But right now the American middle class is moving backward, not forward. Over-pampered plutocrats don’t need unemployment compensation, but plenty of us in the middle class have had to rely on it just to pay the bills and help our families to survive. Wall Street bankers don’t need union protections or a jobs program – but millions of us regular Americans do.

Look around. We all know that real unemployment is above 16 percent when you count people only partially-employed. We need our banks, large and small, to lend to small businesses to create new jobs.

We need to address the needs of the majority of Americans, not the privileged few.

Calling For A New & Improved US Senate, and A New Constitutional Convention

I like this, but it does not go far enough. Besides, I suspect it will never happen. But I am surprised to read that 32 state legislatures have already passed calls for another constitutional convention. Evidently no matter when a state called for a Constitutional Convention for the federal government it is still in effect, even if negated at some later point. The constitution presented here to replace our rapidly aging creaky old one is a superb improvement.

But I have no clue on how we could get from point A (what we have now) to point B (what we need and should have) without violence, destruction, chaos, anarchy, and insanity. If we were to get to a point where this would have to be addressed, the death knell for the United States would likely occur at this time in history.

This is likely the man who is responsible for utterly ruining local TV and radio news, turning it into ambulance chasing, police blotter sensationalism, pretty boy models and stripper wannabes for anchors and reporters; hyperbole and hype; blather and mundaneness; concentration on celebrities and scandal; and a huge dumbing down of the product, among many others. Video may have killed the radio star; but Magid definitely killed journalism in television and radio media, and has helped largely cripple it to a sense in some if not much of print media as well, much to the disadvantage of the citizenry. I clearly remember his direction on sad sack Albuquerque stations in the early to mid 1970s when I was a youth. We are tremendously poorer because of him, his views and actions, and the consequences.

In this age of plunging home values and prices, the only logical individuals that should commit to this sort of serious purchase are family types. For some others, it is an investment with some tax credits and gains possible; but the numbers of those who stand to gain financially from buying a home with a short term view in having the commitment are become much fewer in number.

It now strongly appears that for a home to provide a decent return on the investment, one must commit themselves to home residency for 15 years, probably longer. The Dark Foreboding Future Outlook Concerning Unemployment

At least 4.2 million jobs were reported to have been lost in 2009, and that number is probably underreported by at least 20 %. Can a number so large be lost again in 2010 ? Probably not, but expect about 2.8 to 3.5 million job losses in this year, with most occuring in the second half of the year. U-6 unemployment is headed towards exceeding 20 %, with some metro areas having rates nearing 30 %, and rural areas upwards of 33 - 35 %. The social consequences of these numbers are staggering, appalling, and dangerous. The political consequences for many Democrats in critical areas of the nation look fatal.

And now its increasingly apparent all those billions of stimulus dollars that went into highway project have not helped whatsoever with unemployment across the nation.

Mountain Time Zone Blog 2010 Outlook and Projections

The year 2010 will be as challenging, if not more so, than the year 2009. This writer sees little improvement, if at all, in the lives of most American citizens. The slow deterioration of the United States will continue on unabated, and very well could worsen at a faster pace than anticipated if certain circumstances eventuate. With that being said, here are some specifics:

1. Unemployment will continue to be the most immediate serious problems facing American citizens. The U-3 unemployment rate will see little decrease in 2010, and is likely to inch upward. The forecast here is for the rate to wobble between 9.7 and 11.2 %. The more accurate and realistic U-6 unemployment rate will continue to be grim and will worsen, as more citizens are resigned to just part-time work or are underemployed; and the numbers of those who have just given up and dropped out to live off of relatives and friends will increase. The U-6 rate will be between 17.0 and 21.0 % during 2010, and the seriousness of this crisis is likely to be statistically understated.

2. With demand remaining soft at best, and likely declining, there will be little if any inflation in 2010 for prices for consumer goods, and raw materials prices should remain static as well. Possible exceptions exist for food prices, which are contingent upon weather and other factors; but do not expect any notable upticks. Sales and markdowns will continue to increase with retailers, and some great deals will be had by those who are particularly observant. A risk of inflation is a growing cloud on the horizon, but large factors remain uncertain in trying to access this looming threat and possible disaster in the next several years in the form of hyperinflation.

3. GDP will have an up and down year, with a range of <1.6> to +2.2 % in quarterly changes. The first quarter will be decent with a minimal increase, but the final two quarters should see declines. Demand will continue to be soft at best, and nonexistent to an extent for some goods and services. Most nonessential manufacturing will be all but completely shut down. The second half of 2010 will be worse than the first half, and it is clearly possible the US will collapse into a second or echo recession far worse than the one that statistically ended in late summer of 2009.

4. Corporations have largely found the solution to keep themselves alive, and that is to hoard cash and run lean and mean. That means little if any investment and growth, and keeping inventory, staffing, and hiring to a minimum, with continuing downscaling and layoffs in order to keep stock prices at a optimal level. Small business will remain moribund with little expansion and growth in the coming year. One place where failures will increase is with banks. After 140 failures in 2009, expect bank failures to near and possibly exceed 200 in number. Of course, large banks, buttressed by federal bailouts, will report record revenues and profits, and bonuses and payouts to executives and management will be appallingly obscene as these entities continue to only affirm their place as the dominant institution and power players in the United States, and to a slightly lessor extent, globally.

5. Housing values and prices will continue downward at varying paces depending on the location and region. Overall, nationally housing prices will lose about 5 - 8 %, but some places will see a decline just in 2010 of better than 20 - 25 %. There is such a huge supply of available homes and overbuilt communities to fully dispel any price growth. New home construction is largely dead across the nation and will continue to be so for the next few years. Federal tax credit programs will help allow for some sales and existing home improvements, but these programs could expire which will only worsen matters. Home values and prices remain several years away from a bottom, and a generation or more away in some areas.

6. One area completely certain to increase and worsen will be with foreclosures. 2010 could see the total number of foreclosures exceed three million in number with a large number of unconventional mortgages due to adjust this year, as well as increased unemployment and hardship. The ever increasing number of vacant houses due to foreclosures only contributes to declining home values and prices, and bloats the inventory.

7. A number of states will struggle with massive budget deficits, and will continue to ruthlessly reduce services and programs to the most helpless and unfortunate in society: children, women, the elderly, handicapped, undereducated, and infirm. Some states will have to borrow money from the federal government just to meet mandatory obligations like unemployment compensation. A state declaring bankruptcy is not out of the question. Among the states in the most dire straits include California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Wisconsin, Michigan, and New York.

8. Oil prices largely went up throughout 2009, and this trend is likely to continue in 2o10. The forecast here is for the benchmark price of a barrel of oil to be between $70 and $110, with the higher end more the trend than the lower end. Only because demand is relatively soft does the price not approach the 2008 numbers. Of course, a significant world event or crisis could lead to prices spiking temporarily higher, but a spike of this order is likely to be a short term occurrence lasting less than 3 months, but it would result in a higher base price being set for the next year out.

9. Global warming and climate change will continue unabated and still somewhat unnoticed on a macro level outside of the northern and southern latitudes, and by those in the know. The biggest consequence of the change now being observed is much more severe storms, with torrential rainfall and flooding occurring. Heatwaves will also increase, but probably not yet to an extent where concern by most people increases. 2010 is likely to be recorded as the hottest year on the planet, but North America will not share in that number for the most part. The Arctic icecap should shrink to a record size of smallest extent, and continuing changes in Antarctica will be observed that are troubling. Loss of fauna and flora species is underway, but noteworthy losses will not be finalized in 2010, but the downward trend toward an inevitable end will continue unabated both for the known and largely unknown species globally. This writer believes the year of the big jolt of change of global warming is now perhaps as few as just a few years away and no later than around 2018. The Planet Earth is headed towards a 4 degrees C global temperature increase within a generation.

10. The 2010 elections are likely to see Republican advances, resulting in a stalemate for the remaining two years of the Obama administration on legislative and policy agenda. Expect little if any legislative successes in 2010 and no policy successes to address vital American citizen issues such as climate change, poverty, infrastructure, labor, and income inequality. World affairs will continue to take an inordinate amount of the administration's focus and direction, with the eternal unrest and crisis across the Middle East; growing instances of terrorism, fatalities, and uncertainty with Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, and beyond; increasing saber rattling by Russia, North Korea, and Iran; paradoxical perils and fears with China and its economy, military, and aspirations on the world stage; and growing famine and hunger in increasing numbers globally. Terrorist strikes and increased insurgency and unrest in places like Pakistan and Yemen are likely to result in expanded American and allied military presences there.

11. The price of gold will continue to rise with a threshold exceeding $1350 per ounce met during the year. Meanwhile the US dollar will continue to decline, slowly easing downward relative to other currencies throughout 2010 for the most part. 2010 very well could be the end for the dollar as the global benchmark currency as moves are underway in a number of nations to end that status. An increase in that trend would be disastrous for the American currency in almost unimaginable ways. The possibility of a collapse of the US currency grows more likely as each years goes by.

12. Stock indexes are now proven to be completely irrational and out of touch with the nation at whole. With that realization, the range expected to be seen in most indexes will undergo minimal changes. Expect a range of about 10-15 % either way throughout the year, as the Dow, NASDAQ, S&P, and others increasingly prove to be quite irrelevant in the true big picture.

13. Credit availability will be but absent across the nation, and even large, established proven organizations will find it difficult to find any financing even if they want to grow and expand. There will only be a handful of mergers proposed at all. The staggering federal deficit will cast a tall shadow over the nation's economy, stifling opportunity and improvement for most. Federal rates will remain largely near zero and unchanged for the year ahead as they have in 2009.

14. Finally, and most importantly, Americans will continue to grow increasingly disillusioned and dispassioned. A malaise has grown across the nation, and many Americans have responded by withdrawing and hunkering down and holing up. Ratings for NFL and college football have set tremendous records this autumn which reflects this trend. Frugality, self-sustainment, and self-substanance are the order of the day now for most and increasingly more people in the United States. Expect low turnout in elections this year which will only prove to help Republicans score gains in many regions. The only possibility to the the opposite is the possible split of the Democratic Party with the formation of a progressive, anti-corporatist third party which could grow into a significant player for the 2012 election.

As stated last year, All in all, 2010 is looking to be a worse year than '09, mainly due to all the problems that were created in past years and have been festering, waiting for right time to explode. Very few citizens will be able to avoid having mud land on them to at least a small extent, giving them great pain and increased hardship and tragedy. The US continues to take significant steps towards state fascism, with corporations that parts of oligopolies continuing to gain power and financial wealth at the expense of the American citizen and their long beautiful history of democracy and direct-election voting.

It has been over eight years since the US launched combat operations in Afghanistan, and over six and a half years in Iraq. Prior to these military operations, the longest war fought by the US was in Vietnam, from the spring of '65 until the spring of '73. Other unofficial long wars include the Cold War against the USSR from 1945 until 1990, and the frontier wars of conquest against the native Indian tribes and peoples on the North American continent that lasted from early in the 17th century until near 1900. The combined length of both WWI and WWII were less than five and a half years, which says alot about what this mission has been all about and the level of commitment and sacrifice the government, businesses, and citizens of the US are williing to take on.

It is indeed sad to ponder this and all the waste and futility that has occurred. And it is all but absolutely certain these wars will continue on much as The Cold War and Indian Conquest Frontier Wars did for decades to come.

Opinion on Afghanistan Troop Increase Plan

As President Obama plans to announce yet another increase in troop numbers in the Middle East quagmire known as Afghanistan, my opinion remains unchanged. The US needs to leave Afghanistan militarily, withdrawing all troops within six months or less. This decision by Obama is wrong and will come back to bite him horrendously.

Dozens of empires in the last several millennia have failed in their endeavors in Afghanistan. The British Empire to a certain extent and the USSR to a large extent were brought down by their prolonged ineffective military presence in Afghanistan. History will repeat itself yet again, this time for the US in increasing likelihood with this poor decision.

The word solstice comes from the Latin solstitium or sol (the sun) + -stit-, -stes (standing).

The summer solstice occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer, which is located at 23.5° latitude North, and runs through Mexico, the Bahamas, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, and southern China. Because of the Earth's tilt, the sun will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer at 1145 pm MDT on June 20, 2009. For every place north of the Tropic of Cancer, the sun is at its highest point in the sky and this is the longest day of the year.

The winter solstice occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, which is located at 23.5° latitude South of the equator and runs through Australia, Chile, southern Brazil (Brazil is the only country that passes through both the equator and a tropic), and northern South Africa. The winter solstice marks the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and will occur at 1047 am MST on December 21, 2009.

We all know that the Earth makes a complete revolution around the sun once every 365 days, following an orbit that is elliptical in shape. This means that the distance between the Earth and Sun, which is 93 million miles on average, varies throughout the year. During the first week in January, the Earth is about 1.6 million miles closer to the sun. This is referred to as the perihelion. The aphelion, or the point at which the Earth is about 1.6 million miles farther away from the sun, occurs during the first week in July. This fact may sound counter to what we know about seasons in the Northern Hemisphere, but actually the difference is not significant in terms of climate and is NOT the reason why we have seasons. Seasons are caused by the fact that the Earth is tilted on its axis by 23.5°.

The summer solstice occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer, which is located at 23.5° North, and runs through Mexico, the Bahamas, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, and southern China. There are two times of the year when the Earth's axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun, resulting in an equal amount of daylight and darkness at all latitudes. These events are referred to as equinoxes and occur near March 21 (Vernal Equinox) and near September 21 (Autumnal Equinox). At the equator, the sun is directly overhead at noon on the two equinoxes. The Vernal Equinox occurred at 544 am MDT on March 20, 2009. The Autumnal Equinox will occur at 318 pm MDT on September 22, 2009.

The Mountain Time Zone Perspective Blog has made it to the mid - morning of Sunday 14 July and the internet connection is still up and running, but for how much longer is unknown.

Generally this writer is trying to provide a list of critical, interesting, and sometimes light hearted links on a daily basis on weekdays. In the coming several days to week and beyond, if two to three days go by without any columns with these links information, or another column, one can assume the internet connection is no longer available and maybe for an extended period of time due my personal financial circumstances becoming even more grievous.

One caveat, however: whem this writer once again begins his mindless and inane employment on MON 15 June and continues with in the coming days to weeks, the workday may be of enough a length and result in fatigue which will prevent postings from occurring regularly. If this does become the case, this writer will place a note on this blog informing its readers of just such that case.

At this time, this blogger is hoping and planning to relocate from Cheyenne WY to Colorado Springs CO sometime in either September or October 2009, the earlier the better. The thought of another Wyoming winter is simply too much to contemplate bearing again, but the relocation will be strongly dependent on one's financial standing, and physical health in actually getting the move done as he will be doing it almost entirely on his own, with repeatedly going up and down a flight of stairs a large obstacle to overcome in the process.

We have made it to the morning of Tuesday 9 July and the internet connection is still up and running, but for how much longer is unknown.

Generally this writer is trying to provide a list of critical, interesting, and sometimes light hearted links on a daily basis on weekdays. In the coming several days to week and beyond, if two to three days go by without any columns with these links information, or another column, one can assume the internet connection is no longer available and maybe for an extended period of time due my personal financial circumstances becoming even more grievous.

One caveat, however: if this writer does miraculously manage to acquire employment in the coming days to weeks, the workday may be of enough a length and result in fatigue which will prevent postings from occurring regularly. One of the biggest reasons many citizens voted for Barrack Obama for President last November was due to his promise to get health care reform with a dependable inexpensive public element and option for those without an inexpensive private insurance option available or affordable. It now strongly appears legislation that would accomplish that is going nowhere and that we Americans are going to be stuck with a national program that furthers insurance companies control and domination, resulting in higher premiums, less coverage, and overall a poor system that leaves much to be desired and lacking.

This is the first powerful setback for the Democratic President, who will take the blame within months for failing to provide leadership and support for a legislation package broadly wanted by most Americans in the form of a single payer national government program where insurance corporations would be minor players. It is the first real defeat and the start of a negative trend for the Obama Administration. The honeymoon is over and first 100 days are done with. Expect little if any constructive and progressive legislation of any kind originating from and supported by the White House over the next 3 1/2 years now.

Expect the number of uninsured Americans to only increase in numbers in the coming months and years with premiums becoming far too expensive, too limited in coverage, and the continuing and growing ramifications of the ongoing economic collapse that has no end in sight. An additional consequence will be an increasing number of personal bankrupcies which will only further impact the overall economy on a diverse and widescale basis

Plainly, our government is about to blow it, largely due to bribery, graft, and corruption on the part of insurance corporations, the mega pharamaceutical industry, and other agents of treason.

Blog Hiatus Looming

Due to matters largely beyond my control - successfully securing full time employment - there is a growing likelihood this blog will be going on a lengthy indefinite hiatus as this writer will be without electricity and internet access within the next ten days, followed by the loss of his home unit within the next month to six weeks.

Events like these are indeed unfortunate, but the economic collapse coupled with my age being at a level where employer interest is already minimal is likely to push me over the edge and out. There are simply no jobs hiring that offer fulltime or even half of that, and the indifference towards job seekers is all but universal. And there are simply no resources this writer can turn to do to keep the wolves from crashing through the door and consuming me, as all my resources have been now exhausted.

The blog posts and columns should continue at least until the middle or end of next week, but the outlook beyond that is quite grim and unfavorable unless this is a stunning and surprising turn in the course of events that is anticipated currently.

United States Unemployment Rises to 16.4 %

Given the inaccuracies of statistics and the overall malaise effecting the US economy, the actual real number is in excess of 20 % if you factor in all the people who are underemployed working part time and in positions beneath their experiences, education, and intellect.

Unfortunately, these numbers are destined to continue to rise for at least the next several months, and most probably deep into 2010 and now possibly 2011 or 2012. Unemployment could very well peak at 27 - 28 % before inching down. Levels seen currently will not be revisited until at least 2012.

On a personal note, yours truly has now been out of work for six months and there is an almost universal indifference towards him by employers in his prolonged unsuccessful job search. This unmitigated failure is leading towards major issues.

For Most of the Last One Hundred Years, This Was Unimaginable

It is really amazing to see the fall of the pre-eminent corporation in the history of the United States, General Motors. The fact this is happening this morning with the official bankruptcy filing simply boggles the mind if one has a historical perspective or just merely lived for a number of years when GM was the corporate monstrosity as the biggest and most influential business in the United States during the 20th Century. For most of our lives, GM was among the biggest symbols of the United States, its successes, economy, and promising future. A saying which was first said in the 1950s, probably earlier, goes like this: "As GM goes, so goes the nation !"

If there is still any truth to this, we as Americans, as a nation, are in a big heap of trouble...

If you were to walk up to a typical New York executive in the 1960s -- think Don Draper in AMC's "Mad Men" -- and tell him that General Motors Corp. would be in bankruptcy by 2009, he would have thought you were delusional, or perhaps a Communist. GM was more than just the world's largest and most admired corporation; it was the final vindication of the American Way, the perfected and even divinely inspired example of democratic capitalism that stood opposed to the airless atheism and nullity of the Soviet system.

Besides Leonid Brezhnev and members of the Soviet Politburo and KGB, this is the one man whose actions and decisions have the US in Afghanistan for almost all of this decade and likely to continue for some years into the future.

I watched these ads in recent weeks and found out they were misleading and deceitful. I seriously doubt many others have discovered the same truth, and have bought into them hook, line, and sinker. Once again the evil and greed of big banks can be seen by those aware or enlightened.

Just yet another huge reason to despise, abhor, and scorn evil telecom corporations that need to be eliminated and cut up into tiny pieces.

Statements like the one made by Obama concerning the fairness of bank executives bonuses and pay clearly indicate he either has no clue or has totally sold out to the banks like most everyone else, including ALL Republicans, in Washington and most state legislatures. We are indeed doomed.

More levels of government need to do this, but caution needs to be applied to make sure the funds are placed in institutions that are responsible and have a history of good policy and procedure.

As sad and pathetic as this reads, it is likely the best case scenario ahead but an overly optimistic outlook at best as compared to what really will happen. As Herbert points, the worst of it is almost entirely being experienced rather harshly by the poor and the lower ends of the middle class.

Lets hope this works before the pines of the West are all but gone within the next two decades.
