As is often usual, other parts of the world act more progressively and aggressively when comes to environmental hazards. Plastic shopping bags are one of the easiest issues to address as they do great harm to our environment virtually throughout the globe. Outright bans are a good idea, but a steep tax or deposit on them would also discourage use and drive that usage down substantially, perhaps as much as what has been experienced in Ireland. Hopefully federal legislation will be enacted in 2009 to do just that so in a few years, plastic shopping bags will be but a memory like other environmentally hazards products such as leaded gasoline and DDT. State legislatures should take the lead, however, in 2008 to get this movement started and rolling.*****
