Illinois recently conducted an election to fill the seat of longtime retiring US Representative and former Speaker of the House Republican Dennis Hastert. Democrat Bill Foster, a nuclear physicist and scientist, defeated Republican Jim Oberweis in a congressional district that is strongly Republican. This election bodes well for Democrat prospects in November. I earlier wrote about projections that placed hope on perhaps a pickup of 40 or more seats in the House by Democrats in the upcoming November elections. This Illinois election may very well be a bellweather of future successes by Democrats. What would be best would be a US House with at least 285-290 Democrats, giving strength and impetus for powerful public policy change, particularly on economic issues, that is desparately and critically needed.http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/election08/103
