Demos Pick Up Hastert Congressional Seat

Illinois recently conducted an election to fill the seat of longtime retiring US Representative and former Speaker of the House Republican Dennis Hastert. Democrat Bill Foster, a nuclear physicist and scientist, defeated Republican Jim Oberweis in a congressional district that is strongly Republican. This election bodes well for Democrat prospects in November. I earlier wrote about projections that placed hope on perhaps a pickup of 40 or more seats in the House by Democrats in the upcoming November elections. This Illinois election may very well be a bellweather of future successes by Democrats. What would be best would be a US House with at least 285-290 Democrats, giving strength and impetus for powerful public policy change, particularly on economic issues, that is desparately and critically needed.
