The Big Squeeze: Tough Times for the American Worker, by Steven Greenhouse. This recently published book provides a lot of hands-on information on the harsh effects and consequences of global trade policy on American workers as a result of trade treaties and agreements in the last two decades. Much of this was entirely foreseeable, but it is far worse than many originally imagined. Anyone with any sensibility could see foreign trade agreements would have the effect of lowering the standard of living for Americans far more so than raising the standard of living for foreigners in other nations. It was not going to be a case of raising all boats, but instead, lowering the highest boats. Corporations and governments have sure destroyed things, chief among them the American ideal of a better life for the next generation, in just two decades.
