Hearst, one of largest publishers of newspapers across the US, has announced it will shutdown the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper within weeks if it cannot reduce expenses and costs by a large margin. This announcement likely means the death of the newspaper by summer, if not sooner. The end of the San Francisco Chronicle means the city has no newspaper of its own being published daily. Of course the Bay Area has a number of other daily papers still functioning, and hopefully strongly, such as the San Jose Mercury News and The Oakland Tribune, among others. The San Francisco Chronicle has the 12th largest newspaper circulation nationally, and second greatest in the Pacific Time Zone. It has been published since the year the War Between The States Ended, 1865.
The looming quick demise of the Chronicle is the strongest indication yet of the widespread and broad troubles being faced by newspapers across the nation. It is certain more shutdowns of noted and famed newspapers is looming in the coming months and the next few years. This is a very tragic development.
