The numbers released by the Pew Institute recently are quite alarming. A 50 % increase in the population of the US in the coming 40 years with the vast majority of the growth by Hispanic immigrants and their scions will have grave implications on the US economy and environment. Hopefully these new Americans will embrace education and technology so they can be integrated into the overall culture. If not, we risk creating a substantial undereducated underclass that is largly alienated from the political traditions and history of the nation, and this magnitude of an underclass could be very dangerous to our democracy and even capitalism. The other finding released by Pew concerns the rapidly expanding number of seniors in America. This is not surprising given the decades long existence of the Baby Boom generation and their inevitable march into the ages of geezerdom. The consequences of such a huge elder generation is something that very well result in confrontation and friction with younger Americans displeased with huge social and financial costs they will have to bear to support the
growing large numbers of seniors, many whom will live to be centegenarians in greater numbers than ever in history.
